Duo Grenades Hurled to Radio Galkacyo slightly Wounds two Journalists


The National Union of Somali Journalists (NUSOJ) condemns the double grenade attack at the Radio Galkacyo on Wednesday evening around 7:30pm local time by unknown assailants, in which two journalists were slightly wounded.

The Journalists; Shiine Abdi Ahmed, Editor and deputy director of the radio suffers left leg injury and Abdullahi MohamudAden, a presenter suffers right arm injury resulting from flying shrapnel; both were rushed to the hospital for treatment, according to journalists in Galkacyo who spoke with NUSOJ.

“the first hand grenade was hurled to the station’s building around 7.40 pm local time which hit the balcony where several journalists were sitting.” Iman Mohamed Jama of Raxanreeb Radio and union representative in the town reached by phone said, “Within minutes the second grenade was hit near the office of the radio director.”

“The wounds are not life threatening and received urgent treatment.” Mr. Jama added.

The National Union of Somali Journalists (NUSOJ) condemns the barbaric attack against the radio and calls for the Puntland authorities to open urgent investigation and bring the perpetrators to justice.

“We condemn this heinous attack against our colleagues and call for urgent investigation.” Mohamed Ibrahim, NUSOJ Secretary General said, “We call for the Puntland authorities to ensure the safety of the working journalists in Galkacyo.”

The Journalists in the town of Galkacyo have been facing death threats that prompted some of them to leave the town for safety. At least 5 journalists were killed in Somalia in 2004 triggering the dangers the Somali journalists face.
