SNA, AU troops carry out joint sweep in Mogadishu

Somali government troops, along with the African Union soldiers (AMISOM) have conducted a joint sweep in parts of Mogadishu, to beef up the security of the horn of Africa capital.

The dawn operation carried out at several nighbourhoods in Howlwadag and Wardhigley districts, where the joint forces are reportedly seized dozens of people linked to Al shabaab.

Somalia security forces and AMISOM soldiers launched door-to-door searches in Bakaro, the biggest market in Somalia which once served as a financial hub for Al shabaab since 2011.

The public transport and people’s movement were rigorously hampered and came to standstill for hours by the security operation of SNA and African Union forces, according to witnesses.

The motive behind Tuesday’s operation in Mogadishu remained unclear, as the security officials of Somalia did not make prior notice to the local media about their joint sweep.
